Today’s Idiom Mini Lesson: that won’t fly

Meaning: an idea, plan, action, stance, or level of quality will not be well received, will not be acceptable, will not be approved, will not work, will not be successful


That will never fly.

It’s not gonna fly.

That’ll never fly.


Taking the summer off will not fly with the boss. You might be able to take off a few days at the most.

Raising rates in a declining industry will never fly.

Asking your guests to bring their own food to your wedding isn’t going to fly. What are you thinking?

Telling your teacher that your dog ate your homework won’t fly.

So you invented square tires? Sorry, but I don’t think that’ll fly.
